MBBS in Bangladesh

Studying MBBS in Bangladesh is three-tiered and highly subsidized, the government looks after the primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels and also subsidizes many private schools. The Bangladesh government funds over 45 State Universities through the University grant commission.

The Bangladesh education system is divided into three levels:

  • Primary – first to fifth grade
  • Junior secondary – sixth to eighth grade
  • Secondary – month and tenth
  • Higher secondary – eleventh and twelfth
  • And tertiary

The education system includes five years of secondary schooling which counts the junior secondary schooling too and it ends with a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination. Since 2009, a new examination at the primary level was introduced as Primary Education Closing (PEC) for students to pass to proceed to matriculation training which culminates to SSC examination. Qualifying students (those who appeared for the PEC examination) proceed to three years of junior secondary education, i.e. Junior School Certificate (JSC) examination. Students then proceed to SSC examination and qualifying that allows them to appear in Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) examination.

Universities in Bangladesh are divided into three types and they are,

  • Public Universities (government-owned and subsidized)
  • Private Universities (privately owned universities)
  • International Universities (operated and funded by international organizations)

These universities are accredited and affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC). Bangladesh has 47 public universities, 105 private universities, and 2 international universities. Out of these universities, 29 government and private universities provide medical education.

These Medical Colleges are well in providing allopathic and alternative medicine-related medical education at the graduation level to the students. These Medical Colleges are under the direct jurisdiction of The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and are affiliated with a university in the respective region. These Medical Colleges have still to meet the criteria set by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BM&DC). In the present record, there are 112 recognized medical colleges in Bangladesh, 37 of which are public or government-owned and subsidized and 70 are private.

Bangladesh is also furnished by six medical colleges that are run by the Bangladesh Armed Forced and are under the Ministry of Defence.
